The Executive Director for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Edmund Yakani has urged Dr. Riek Machar and leader of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement -In Opposition (SPLM-IO) to compromise on the status of Ruweng as an administrative area. He said he appreciated the people of Ruweng for taking nonviolent means in addressing their issues compared to other places.

Yakani compared the issue of Ruweng with that of the Niger delta in Nigeria where the minority struggle over the majority, He asked “should we allow Ruweng to become like Niger Delta in Nigeria where a lot of armed groups fight over the majority? No we cannot.”

However, Yakani urges Dr. Machar to negotiate on how to share power in the three administrative areas of Pibor, Abyei and Ruweng since an administrative area is not a state but attached to states and they report directly to the President.

Ruweng is one of the oil rich producing areas with more than 50% of the oil output but despite this according to Yakani citizens says the people there lack basic social services such as roads, clean drinking water, limited schools, medical service and women are carried long distances to reach health centers for delivery and continue to give birth to deformed children due to environmental pollution from the oil fields.

Ruweng is also rich in animal resources, fisheries and agriculture and it is located in the northern part of South Sudan and it borders Fashoda, Fangak to the southeast, Liech to the south, Twic to the southwest, Abyei to the west, and Sudan the north.

On 2 October 2015, President Salva Kiir issued a decree establishing 28 states in place of the 10 constitutionally established states and Ruweng was one of these created states. Today after re reverting to 10 states in accordance with the Revitalized Peace Agreement, Ruweng was named an administrative area.
